• Defining the Need •
Since 1994, Laura’s House has been committed to changing social beliefs, attitudes and the behaviors that perpetuate domestic violence while creating a safe space in which to empower individuals and families affected by abuse. In our current climate of economic uncertainty, financial hardships have limited options for victims of domestic violence resulting in increased requests for assistance. We endeavor to meet this increasing, unmet need by building a larger Emergency Shelter to replace our existing facility and an expanded transitional living complex for longer term housing.
Every one of the 28 beds in the current shelter has been consistently full the last 12 months, with a continual backlog of families on a waiting list seeking assistance. In the last year, incidents have risen an astounding 25% in the number of women and over 60% in the number of children in Orange County seeking to end violence in their home lives.
The new facilities will enable Laura’s House to expand services to victims of domestic violence, while continuing to provide life changing emergency services, therapy, legal advocacy and education in a safer, more comfortable environment. The expansion will allow Laura’s House to serve 175 more clients per year, increasing program capacity by 93% and 15% overall, in Orange County.
