LADERA RANCH, Calif., Oct. 1, 2012 – To commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2012, Uncharted Journeys is hosting its 1st Annual Canyon Country Hike & Hoedown to benefit Laura’s House, a non-profit organization whose mission is to change the social beliefs, attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate domestic violence, while creating a safe space in which to empower individuals and families affected by abuse.

The 1st Annual Canyon Country Hike & Hoedown will take place on Sunday, October 21 at the Santiago Event Center located at 27100 Baker Canyon Road in Silverado, Calif. Registration for the event begins at 9:00 a.m., with the hikes beginning at 10:00 a.m., followed by the Hoedown at 11:30 a.m. The event will feature two different hikes, a 3-mile easy to moderate hike for all ages, and a 5-mile moderate to strenuous hike for experienced hikers.

“We are very pleased to be able to shine a light on domestic violence, and raise funds through our 1st Annual Canyon Country Hike & Hoedown that will  help Laura’s House provide shelter and counseling services to women and children who are fleeing violent homes,” said Marilyn McGowan, Chief Exploration Officer, Uncharted Journeys. “This fun-filled event is designed for  the entire family, and will include an adventurous morning hike through the backcountry trails of Silverado Canyon, followed by an opportunity to kick back for a relaxing afternoon with friends and family featuring great food, wine tastings from local vintners, and live country music courtesy of Brad Johnson & The Killin’ Time Band.”

“We are grateful to count Uncharted Journeys as one of our community partners during Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” said Margaret Bayston, CEO and executive director, Laura’s House. “By collaborating with local businesses like Uncharted Journeys, we can build greater awareness for how domestic violence impacts our community, while raising much-needed funds that help sustain our counseling, shelter and community outreach  programs.”
